 The Older Adult Financial Capacity Assessment Course helps psychologists expand their work as experts in legal cases that fall under the jurisdiction of Probate Court. Offered through Wayne State University’s Department of Psychology and the Institute of Gerontology, the course is taught by Institute of Gerontology Director Peter Lichtenberg, PhD, ABPP, and University of Louisville Professor Benjamin Mast, PhD, ABPP. Drs. Lichtenberg and Mast are board-certified clinical geropsychologists with years of experience conducting capacity assessments and providing expert testimony in court hearings. The instructors provide background, review actual cases, and discuss capacity assessment approaches across 10 topics. Participants will strengthen their skills and confidence about performing expert work in civil legal cases involving financial capacity, guardianship, and conservatorship, as well as in report writing and testifying in depositions and at trial. The live on-line course will be provided through ZOOM weekly, in 60-minute increments, including 10 min Q and A.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

2.Describe core competencies for capacity assessment
3.Conduct whole person assessments4.Conduct financial capacity assessments
5.Describe financial exploitation and its relationship to capacity assessment
6.Assess undue influence7.Assess guardianship and conservatorship cases
8.Describe how to work with attorney in giving depositions, and court testimony
9.Assess testamentary and contractual capacity
10.Improve legal case report writing and strategies for enhancing your practice

1. Participants should be familiar with online webinars
2. Participants are responsible for having a stable internet connection
3. We will try to help with technical issues but support is limited
4. It is recommended that for the first class participants get on the site 5-10 minutes before class begins
5. Because we had such a large waitlist from the previous course, there may be more attendees for this course (30-35) than is typical for our previous offerings (25).

COST
The complete Older Adult Financial Capacity Assessment Course provides 10 CEs in psychology and costs $350. Fees are payable to the Institute of Gerontology after the applicant is accepted into the course.
