Want to start or more effectively operate a community organization, small business, or social enterprise?  Want to learn more about eligibility for PLLCs as a community care organization, and forming partnerships or LLCs?

This presentation, 'Forming and maintaining your for-profit, nonprofit, or social enterprise and complying with the Corporate Transparency Act' will provide easy to understand explanations of confusing legal topics for people looking to better their community through business. The presentation will start with a general overview of independent contracting, as well as different entities, for those looking to start or maintain an organization. It will then focus on the Corporate Transparency Act and how your entity form may impact your obligations under this new law.

Topics covered will include:

  • Entities 101 and Independent Contracting
    • What is an entity, and which entity is right for you?
    • What do you need to know to work as an independent contractor?
  • Social Enterprises 101 – how to benefit your community and make money
  • Corporate Transparency Act – what does it mean for small businesses, such as your community care organization, therapy practice, and consulting firm?

Presented by student attorneys (under the supervision of experienced and licensed attorneys) in the Wayne State University Law School Business and Community Law Clinic (BCLC). The BCLC provides free legal services to qualifying community-based businesses as well as for-profit and nonprofit organizations that aspire to create social good and impact to revitalize Detroit and Michigan.
