Q & A - Human Services Management Certificate:

Why would I want this certificate? Well, it can be good thing to put on your resume in addition to your MSW degree information. This certificate highlights the work you've been engaged in and the skills you've enhanced through your advanced year of macro/I-CPL practice. It can be a conversation starter in an interview.

How did we get approval for this certificate?   We completed an audit of our I-CPL advanced practice curriculum and the numerous electives connected to I-CPL as well as the nine field competencies which we then connected to the NSWM competencies.

Thematic areas of focus and alignment were:

1) Executive Leadership:   interpersonal skills; analytical & critical thinking; professional behavior; relationship building; communication skills; advocating for social, racial, economic justice in practice; facilitating innovative change

2) Resource Management:  human resource practices; supervision practices; budget/fiscal analysis; ensure transparency and accountability; information technology

3) Strategic Management:   fund development; messaging, communications & PR; assessing risk; strategic planning; facilitating racial equity, organizational & community assessment processes; collaborative decision making / consensus decision making

4)  Community Collaboration:  build relationships with individuals, communities and organizations; work in collaboration to engage in macro practice in and with communities and organizations; community organizing and practice; policy practice, advocacy and legislative knowledge

NSWM competencies also include:  initiating and facilitating change process; policy change at multiple levels of practice; utilizing research informed practice / practice informed research within the community and organizational context; promotion of life-long learning; identification of disparities and promotion of equity; possesses analytical and critical thinking skills that promote organizational growth sustainably.

Professional organizations:  There are two national / leading macro-focused social work organizations that are member-based organizations; the NSWM and ACOSA (Association for Community Organization and Social Administration).

You may want to consider becoming a member of one (or a few) organizations that are connected to your framing of social work practice.  The NSWM membership is free (https://socialworkmanager.org/membership/) and ACOSA membership is as low as $35/year (http://www.acosa.org/joomla/).  For many macro focused social workers these are our 'home' organizations; some graduates also choose to belong to NASW.

Organizational membership(s) are great additions to your resume!
