Wayne State University School of Social Work has partnered with Kognito to give social workers and other health professionals access to simulated learning. Kognito simulations (pdf) "harness the power of conversations with virtual humans in a safe and versatile digital environment to offer healthcare providers hands-on practice leading patient encounters that prepare them for real life clinical practice."

At Risk in Primary Care prepares healthcare providers to recognize warning signs and screen patients for mental health concerns in primary care visits. Providers will be better prepared to lead brief interventions using evidence-based motivational interviewing (MI) techniques. Each simulated encounter introduces learners to a patient exhibiting signs of mental health risk. Providers must address their patient's chief complaint and use effective communication techniques to investigate potential underlying mental health issues contributing to the and refer for additional treatment when appropriate.

Learning objectives

  • Screen patients for depression and substance use using evidence-based tools.
  • Recognize risk factors and warning signs of substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation.
  • Conduct brief interventions using motivational interviewing (MI) techniques.
  • Engage in collaborative treatment planning with patients.
  • Coordinate referrals to treatment or follow-up care.

Steps to complete this course

Pay for the course: The cost of the lecture with 2 Continuing Education Clock Hours (CECH) is $25. The course is open to all licensed social work practitioners. Non-Social Workers will obtain a certificate of completion.
